What is the attire or dress code during Orientation week? The attire is casual and weather appropriate (except for the White Coat Ceremony). Please wear full length shirts, blouses and no tees or tank tops.
On Wednesday, you will be participating in teambuilding activities outside at Genesee Valley Park. We have a shelter but it is not enclosed. Therefore, please select weather appropriate casual dress for the day. Appropriate length shorts are acceptable and please no open toe shoes.
On Friday for White Coat, please wear professional attire and we recommend low heel shoes as you will be walking down aisles and up/down stairs to reach the stage to accept your White Coat.

When will I be billed and when is the payment due? Fall: Charges are typically assessed and available to view in UR Student by July 5th with payment due by August 10th. The initial email notification for Fall will be sent July 18th.
Spring: Charges are typically assessed and available to view in UR Student around January 5th with payment due by February 10th. The initial email notification for Spring will be sent January 18th.

If you have a balance due in UR Student, you will periodically receive emails notifying you when an upcoming payment is due. The University of Rochester does not mail paper bills or statements.
Can I see my charges ahead of time? The Bursar’s Office has a list of tuition & fees here.
Medical Students enrolled full-time are typically assessed the following per semester charges in fall and spring:
  • Tuition: School of Medicine & Dentistry – M.D.
  • Student Services Fee - medical (amount varies)
  • UHS Infection Control Fee
  • Mandatory Health Fee
  • Health Insurance (unless waived)
Other charges may also be assessed due to a variety of factors.
How can I pay my bill? The University of Rochester offers many options to make payment including check, eCheck, and payment cards (for an additional fee). Detailed information is available under “PAYMENTS” here.
How will I receive my financial aid? If all of your financial aid paperwork is complete, your financial aid will be disbursed early during Orientation Week. If your aid exceeds our charges, a refund will be ordered for you. You will be given instructions for providing your direct deposit information during your UR Student On-boarding process.

What is the process for Accommodations? To be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is committed to making reasonable accommodations to assist students with documented disabilities to fulfill their educational objectives.

You will be given the opportunity to notify the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry of your required accommodations through the Orientation Forms web site. Please complete your notification through that site so it is tracked you completed the required form.

Where do I park? During Registration weeks: Park in the visitor lot outside of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, 415 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620. A QR code will be emailed to students prior to registration for entry into this visitor lot.

If you need parking for school, you will need to go in person to our Parking Office located at 70 Goler House, at the corner of East Drive and Celebration Drive. Parking Office hours are Monday thru Friday from 8am – 4:00pm. There is also a Parking Office on the Ground Floor of the main hospital parking garage on Elmwood Avenue. This office is to the left of the ground floor elevators, and the hours are 6am – 11pm. You will need to bring your ID badge and vehicle information (license plate/make/model) to the Parking Office. You may want to take a photo your license plate. Parking for students is typically assigned to Lot 1 and there is an annual fee.
White Coat Ceremony – Can family/guests attend? At this time, there is no limit to the number of guests who can attend the White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center Auditorium, 300 E. River Road, Rochester, NY 14642. Students need to arrive by 8:00am (no later than 8:15am) and doors open to guests at 8:15am. Signs for parking and entrance will be posted and staff will assist with directions to the auditorium. The White Coat Ceremony will be live-streamed and the link to the livestream, once available, will be in Friday’s Daily Schedule.
How does student health insurance work? On the Admissions Orientation forms site on there will be forms requiring you to log onto the University Health Service (UHS) website to either accept or decline the UR Student insurance. The forms will be uploaded to the Admissions Orientation forms site in June.

If you choose to decline it, you will be asked to indicate what insurance will be covering you.
If that insurance passes the University’s requirements, you will receive a confirmation that your declination is accepted.

You can access the UHS site here, but you will also need to complete a form through the Admissions Orientation forms site for tracking purposes. The UHS site will also be updated in June with Health Insurance information for this academic year.

Technology The UR Tech Store is located in the Medical Center, room G-7220B (next to the Xerox Print Center) and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Information can be found on their Web Site.

Frequently Asked Questions regarding student iPads.

URMC Box Account. As an SMD\MD student you will be provided a URMC Box.com account. This will be created for you sometime in July prior to orientation. Once it has been created you will receive an email with the subject: 'FirstName LastName', Your University of Rochester Admin created a Box account for you. This account will be HIPAA compliant, have unlimited storage and other MD students will be able to share files and folders with you. Please do not sign up for a Box.com account using your URMC email address. If you do sign up for a Box.com account using your URMC email address, you will be limited to 10gb of storage, you will not be able to share files and folders with other SMD students and it will not be HIPAA compliant.

iPads Students who matriculate into the MD curriculum are provided with a school issued iPad during Orientation Registration. Medical students are required to use the school issued iPad as it increases the flexibility and ease of accessing information in the Double Helix curriculum and facilitates the exchange of information between medical students. iPads will be configured by Miner Library during orientation registration.
Is there a Fitness Center at the Medical Center? Onsite fitness center resources are available at the College Town Fitness Center on 71 Celebration Drive and the Bloch Fitness Center located on River Campus. Membership to the fitness centers is provided to all URSMD medical students at no charge. Students must complete a brief Fitness Center Orientation and submit membership enrollment forms to the Fitness Center. Fitness Center orientation and enrollment forms are only required once and are good for the students’ tenure at the medical school.
